Fees

What it costs, before you ask

Three flat fees cover nearly everyone who comes to us. You'll have yours in writing at the end of the first meeting.

  • First meeting

Sit down with a lawyer, go through what you owe, and leave with a plan, even if the plan isn't bankruptcy.

    • A lawyer, not an intake form
    • The Chapter 7 income test, run on your pay stubs
    • Your fee, in writing, before you decide
    • Filing anything with the court
    Term:
    Free, 45 minutes

    In person or by video

  • Chapter 7

    Most clients

For most people whose income can't cover what they owe. One fee covers the case from petition to discharge.

    • Your petition and schedules, drafted by us
    • A lawyer beside you at the trustee meeting
    • Calls to any collector who keeps calling
    • Lawsuits a creditor files inside your case
    Term:
Flat fee, quoted in writing before you decide

    Payment plans before filing

  • Chapter 13

For catching up on a house or car over three to five years. The rest of our fee is paid through your plan.

    • A repayment plan built around your budget
    • Every court hearing on your plan
    • Changes to the plan if your income changes
    • Lawsuits a creditor files inside your case
    Term:
A set amount to start, the rest through your plan

Rest of the fee through the plan

These are our attorney's fees. The court's filing fee and the two required courses are separate costs; the court can let you pay its fee in installments.

What we handle

Four problems we solve every week

  • Chapter 7 bankruptcy

Wipes out credit card, medical and personal loan debt for people whose income can't cover it. Most cases close in a few months.

    About Chapter 7
  • Chapter 13 bankruptcy

A court-approved plan to catch up on what you're behind on, paid monthly over three to five years, while you keep your things.

    About Chapter 13
  • Foreclosure

A filing pauses a sheriff's sale. Then we work out whether a plan, a loan change or a sale keeps the most money in your hands.

    About foreclosure
  • Wage garnishment

When a creditor is taking part of each paycheck, filing can stop it, and sometimes bring back what was taken in the last 90 days.

    About garnishment

From clients

In their words

“I put off calling for a year because I thought it would cost money I didn't have. The price was on the website, and it was the price I paid.”

Tanya W.Chapter 7, Dearborn Heights

“Piotr drew the plan on a legal pad at our first meeting. Five years of payments, and we still live in the house on Joy Road.”

Luis and Ana P.Chapter 13, west side

“My paycheck was short by a quarter every week. Mei filed on a Tuesday and the next check was whole.”

Kevin J.Wage garnishment, Hamtramck

Each client's debts and income are different, and what happened in their case may not happen in yours.

What people ask us first

Will I lose my house or my car?

Most people who file keep both. The law protects a set amount of what you own, and Chapter 13 lets you catch up on a mortgage or car loan you've fallen behind on. We tell you where you stand at the first meeting.

Is the first meeting really free?

Yes. It's 45 minutes with a lawyer and there's no charge, whether or not you hire us.

What does the court charge?

The court sets its own filing fee, separate from ours, and you'll take two short required courses. We give you the current amounts in writing at the first meeting.

Will my employer find out?

Not from us, and the court doesn't tell employers. The only time your employer hears about it is when we need them to stop a garnishment.

Can I stop paying my bills now?

Please talk to us first. Some payments, like a car you want to keep, need to stay current until we file.
